The Adventures of Becky - The Lost Information

A quick roundup of the events so far:-

Becky and her friends have been given some information relating to a mysterious Red Jade Buddha, they have had bad dealings with a gang of bikers led by Boris a bald headed thug, who stole this information from them in Midnight Callers and then they retrieved from Boris at his hotel in Boris and the Swan in Inverness in the last chapter.

OK - good to go?

NO - ok. These are the previous games. Don't be long.

Midnight Callers

Boris and the Swan

OK back now? lets go.

Following the successful raid on Boris and his hotel room the girls go back to Roxanne’s house, maybe not such a smart move, they know that they can’t stay long but need to get their stuff together and read the information they have and get some idea of what to do next.

They are able to break in to Boris’s laptop, he had not password protected it, a warning to everyone. However your thief might not get a lucky die roll to decide that there was no password.

Reading Boris’s e-mails addressed to the “Count” (play sinister music), they discover that there is some more information relating to the whereabouts of the Red Jade Buddha that has been stashed away in a cottage in the border lands between Scotland and England near a town called Selkirk.

“If we act quickly, maybe we can to get this before Boris and his cronies are able to collect it” yelps Gabrielle.

Editors note I’m really not sure we can say “yelps” in the 21C I know Enid Blyton would have been happy with the word so I’m going to let it go this time but it will be a sharp reprimand for the script writer if he doesn’t get with it. Humm “get with it”, that’s so 1990’s.

“OK, forget about this angst over out of date phrases” snaps Becky “let’s go”.

An aerial overview of the board, 2ft or 600mm square depending on where you live. The girls will drive down the road from the left hand side of the board, and there will be some opposition. It will arrive in a random time and from a random direction.

The green pennies will be the encounter markers although they are not on the board at this point, I played this game quite a long time ago and have since lost the sheet of paper with the encounters written on it, but obviously one of them is the additional information they are looking for and the others are something else.

Simple game objective, grab the information first and get away.

Just one gratuitous shot.

Well maybe two.

Turn 1 – The girls drive on to the board - Gabrielle and Roxanne in a rather nice MG 2 seater and Becky in a borrowed e-Type Jaguar.

Turn 2 – they jump out of the cars and start to search the area, Becky in the background checks out the encounter marker by the field and finds nothing, Gabrielle checks the outside toilet and fails her Awareness check, they have 2 attempts at this check before assuming there is nothing there, obviously this means they can miss the vital clues and Roxanne moves towards the door into the house.

Turn 3 – A blue van can been seen in the distance, it arrived but failed to activate and so does not get on to the board, giving the girls a bit more time to search, which is a complete waste as they discover nothing.

Turn 4 – Gabrielle is round the back of the house searching and Becky was just going to check inside the house again when the blue van screeches to a halt in the lane.

The bad guys arrive and climb laboriously out of the van.

I used to get a lift to work in a van very similar to this and after an hour in the back, sat on a pallet with a blanket on top for cushioning you take a bit of time to get the circulation going and the legs moving, and I was only 17 then, so laborious is a very good description.

“A Ponds Skin Care Cream van!!!, Who are we dealing with” chuckles Becky, as she turns to face them. “Looks like some of the guys we met in Inverness” but where is Boris, has he been replaced by handsome dark haired Sam Fernando.

Turn 5 – “Get them” shouts Sam who like all good leaders stays behind to direct operations as his henchmen lumber across the short distance to the nearest two girls. Keith A the Asiatic looking biker runs straight at Gabrielle, this is a bit of a mistake because whilst he is quite brave, he can’t fight for toffee and goes down beneath the flailing feet and fists of Gabrielle who can fight for toffee. In fact she quite likes toffee.

Big Dave thinks that the slim blonde Becky is going to be easy meat, he has never heard of Tai Quan Do, no - it’s not a type of toffee and the effects are quite stunning as he lands on his face in the mud OOF. “Out of Fight”

Two down two to go.

Turn 6 – Tank (who can fight) attacks Gabrielle but he can’t fight well enough and he also goes down OOF.

Sam looks on.

Turn 7 – Sam decides he needs to report back on the failure of his troops, so jumps back in the van and reverses as fast as he can up the road. The girls go back to searching but find nothing.

Turn 8 – Gabrielle is having a good day, knocking down two bad men and she finds the missing information in one of the stacks of crates. Go Gabby Go.
Sorry I'll calm down now.

Game over and a complete white wash for the bad guys, but total victory for the girls, :)

What has happened to Boris, the bald headed bad guy, has he been sent to Siberia. Who is Sam – does the fact that his van seem to have more reverse gears than forwards mean he is a quick thinker or as yellow as the sun, will he join Boris in Siberia?

To be continued ……….

If you are still here - thanks for reading and please let me know you passed this way.

  1. I passed this way. First time in a while, too. Nice to see the scenery is as pleasant as ever and the conversation, as always, jovial. But left feeling a bit glum that there was no pretty girls tied up this time around...but I dare say Enid Blyton wouldn't have approved of a casual session of mild BDSM?

  2. Roy - you shock me to the core, the fact that you're only visiting this site for carnal pleasure is very disturbing. :) :) :)

Seriously - it's nice to see you here and if having pretty girls tied up does it I will buy the Pulp figures ones, they've been on my list for years and poo to Enid.

Mind you I'm not sure how I will explain them to Mrs Vagabond :(

    1. Pulp Miniature's Cringing Captives?

      http://www.northstarfigures.com/prod.php?prod=7132

If so I've 80% of that pack going spare (I've only used the unbound damsel reclining back on her rump and propping herself up with her right arm). Hang back from buying them, at the moment I've only found two of the models (the woman tied hands above her head and the woman tied between wooden posts) and I'll pass them on to you at Hammerhead. I was going to sell them on eBay, if you like, buy me a cup of tea at Hammerhead and they're yours. No problem if you don't want them, just say so as you won't offend me or anything.

      Delete
    2. Roy strangely enough the ones you have spare are the two figures I wanted in the pack, the other 2 not too much and who needs a circular saw.
That's a very kind offer and I'll take you up on it.
      Thank you.

    3. John, I've found the entire contents of that Pulp Figures blister pack.

The woman tied up between two wooden posts and the woman tied up with her hands above her head are as-new, perfect condition and definitely surplus to my requirements.

The circular saw blade is pointless, as you say, but is going spare.

I have found the bound reclining damsel and could actually use the miniature myself - but thinking and doing are two vastly separate things in my case - so if you do have a use for the figure, then you can definitely have it. But if it would be going spare with yourself, I might keep it, paint it up as a Starfleet kidnapped crew member and use the model as the mission objective in solo Star Trek games. But only if you don't need it?

      Delete
    4. Roy the first two would be perfect, thanks a lot. I'll look forward to seeing your kidnapped crew member, painted up and acting the part of a damsel in distress.

My planes have just landed, Camel, Fokker Dr1, Spad XIII and Albatros DVa, I am incredibly impressed with them and have decided to spend this years birthday money on some more, see what you have started, I was worried this might happen :) :) Good in't it. ;)

    5. Ha, you want to read the Facebook page of the gaming group I'm in. There's a Wings of War arms race going on between myself and Dave 'One Man and His Brushes' Docherty, and we seem to have pulled others into the madness too! He's probably winning at present as he's got a big 'aerial' gaming mat and stuff for both wars, where as I'm concentrating on The Great War. I'll probably buy a 3'x3' or 4'x4' WW1 game mat from Tinymats and get some games in asap, and look at adding my own bits to Herkybird's solo mechanics.

Back to the bound ladies and I've just had a good look at the seated damsel I've painted up and noticed I can easily convert her negligee/slip/gown -whatever into a torn 1960s Star Trek uniform. That's more suitable for my purpose, so the laid back damsel in saucy bed attire is wanting a good home so will definitely be passed along come Hammerhead.

      Delete
    6. I'm not on Facebook so will not see this unfortunately, I've not come across Tiny mats but that means nothing, I'll have a look at them. I think it's Deep Cut do one that's quite spectacular, it has a light cloud layer laid down over the fields of France. I expect its quite expensive but probably only the cost of 2 or 3 planes.

I said the planes had landed, well at 18:45 the Camel and Fokker Dr1 took off, Mrs Vagabond was persuaded to have a game, which I think went really well, we only had 30 min, but she out flew me, firing 3 times, fortunately her guns jammed twice and she only caused a small amount of damage, I fired twice and hit her twice causing more damage but I was lucky. She was the Red Barron and I had to be Snoopy, life's not really fair, they are my planes and I wanted the Triplane. :(

The highlight for me was when she out manoeuvred me - again!! and came in guns blazing shouting DIE, and then her guns jammed. I've not read the rules yet, but watched a few you tube videos, so I missed out bits of the rules that I didn't know about but the game went very smoothly, quite amazing for a 1st try. It says a lot for the rules they are so simple and yet give an excellent game - I'm a fan.

Really appreciate the offer of bound women, I have explained it all the Mrs V and you're in a lot of trouble if she ever meets you, but it got me off the hook ;)

      Cheers

    7. Sorry, my mistake, it is http://www.tinywargames.co.uk/

I'm having a big debate with myself as to which to go for, the Deepcut spectacular or the WW1 specific from Tinywargames.

I've still not played the game, and yet have lots of planes. Doh! The basic rules in the duel packs I have read and the rules book you get in the Rules and Accessories Pack give the rules needed for two-seat aeroplanes, large bombers and balloons. There's also the Ace Pilot skills and things like altitude rules. However, it is somewhat difficult to buy from the likes of Amazon at a reasonable price - don't buy it at anything other than rrp is my advice, as there isn't enough in the rules box set to warrant the additional expense. Amazon do sometimes sell it for rrp, if you keep looking, or the chap at Wings of War WW1 participation games at the shows sells it to Aerodrome members for the rrp (which is how I got mine). It isn't worth spending more than the rrp on it is what I immediately thought on opening the box, so I just thought I'd pass that on.

Canvas Eagles is a free to download WW1 aeroplane rules set, which I do have a .pdf copy of but haven't read yet. I might see if anything in these would be cool to add to the Wings of Glory WW1 rules for a solo mechanic.

    8. I placed my next order last night 2 Albatros DIII a Siemens DIII and a Bristol 2 seater, I'm convinced that's the way to go fighter manouverability and a sting in the tail. That should sort out Mrs V's apparent airiel dominance.

I've acquired the advanced rules, and you are quite right about the additional content. They don't seem to handle altitude well, but I've not tried it so may be wrong, however I had enough trouble at 1 level without compounding my problems.
I found Canvas Eagles as well but I'm bedazzled by simplicity.
Have you come across shape ways and Red Eagle Miniatures? For planes.

      Delete
    9. I buy from Shapeways quite often. My experience of the company and items is 10/10. However, I've only been buying Star Trek spaceship models, so far, and an Observation Balloon for Wings of Glory, so am not familiar with Red Eagle Miniatures designs and how Shapeways translates them when printing/creating. I've always bought my aeroplanes as the official items so I can get the plane cards and manoeuvre deck, so don't know how to work around the absence.

      https://www.shapeways.com/product/YAMWU8LA2/caquot-type-m-observation-balloon?optionId=60674054

I've just been told that an online webstore, Gameslore, sells some bits at less than rrp. I know a couple of chaps from my gaming group who buy from them, but have never myself.

    10. I only came across Shapeways yesterday so need to look at that in more depth. It seemed as if they were US based and so need importing but I don't know that for sure.
Red Eagle Miniatures, same thing only found them yesterday, it looks as if they cast 1/144 planes in lead and are UK based the planes I looked at were £5:00 for fighters, unpainted, no decals! No bases or stands, no cards or movement decks. It sort of makes Aries not look so expensive after all, although there's certainly money to be saved.

I have thought of making my own plane cards, if I could do that what plane cards would you be interested in and I'll have a stab at it. No promises because I lost photoshop and not sure what to use as a layering software that's free, I have gimp that I think should do it but I can't get to grips with it.
      Cheers

    11. Ah, Red Eagle Miniatures. I remember who they are now. They were at ROBIN show earlier this year with their WW1 models. Yeah, just plain metal stuff, they look like what you'd expect a metal 1/144th scale model to be like, no more no less. They'll get the job done fair enough, if you've already got the movement and shooting decks just photocopy I suppose using a computer printer or the local library. I got my decals from Minibits/Pendraken Miniatures - they're at Hammerhead.

Shapeways. For us, you buy from the website and once you're signed in and registered as being in the UK the prices are converted into £ Sterling. I've always made payment using PayPal and it is paid to them in Euros automatically (Shapeways Europe being based in the Euro Zone). The items you're looking at on Shapeways website are all grouped into the creator's shops but they don't actually print out the items themselves, Shapeways are the manufacturers and allow the designers to advertise and sell to the public through the website. Once you've made an order with Shapeways it'll take about a week for the item to be printed out, the work being done at Shapeways' Rotterdam premises. The finished model will be well packed and handed over to UPS delivery service, who will take it to the Eindhoven UPS centre then fly it over to the UK and it'll make it's way to you. You get emails from Shapeways stating print completion and from UPS delivery advising you on delivery dispatch and the eta of home delivery.

Shapeways is a bit like Amazon, where third-party sellers can sell direct through Amazon and make delivery using Amazon's logistics should they wish. However, some of the designs/designers are better than others, so I'd advise on only getting stuff where you can see examples of the completed print model before committing to the purchase. I'll make a blog post showing some close-up photos of the different materials that can be used for the 3D printing, as there is a difference in how much detail there is depending upon the material used.

As it happens I don't need any cards for Wings of Glory, thanks.

    12. Thanks for the info, and I'll be interested to see your post on the materials, I have heard some are better than others but know very little about it.

    1. Hi Frank - I suppose your good lady was looking over your shoulder when you said that ;)

The studio is having to knock out a few short films to cover the directors spending plans on the next big production. Of course I don't know what it is yet. Roy's got me buying WWI aeroplanes, Eduardo's got me buying Sherlock Holmes board games(it should arrive today) The Addicts got me spending more money on gangsters to go with detecting games he keeps teasing us with, and I've been spending money on more bad guy's for the old west because Franks outlaw gang are getting a bit fed up with being shot, and now there's a jail in town!!
The Studio finances are on a knife edge.

    3. Well Frank 221B Baker Street has just landed along with 4 WWI Fighters, looks like a re-make of the Blue Max might be on the cards.

The rules for Baker street are 5 A5 pages long, they make perfect sense and Mrs V and I have a date to try them out in 5 minutes, but on initial inspection I can see that combined with something like the Pulp Alley plot point resolution system there might be a lot of mileage in Eduardo's detecting idea here. Certainly combining it with some ideas from Greg The Addict I think my studio could be onto a winner. Although gawd knows when I might find time to fit all this in.
All I need now is a name for the studio and somewhere to fix the lights.

    12. Very well, the game itself was entertaining in itself, we played co-op to see how it works, and it was good so is going to work as a solo game. Combined with some miniatures game mechanics and terrain I think it will do exactly what Eduardo said.
I have Three sets of detecting rule sets to read through but I think 221b will work on it's own. Needs to maybe have more of a miniatures game fighting opposition - maybe.
The clues require a bit of thinking about, some more than others, so for example one part of a two part clue was VALUE, one of the characters in the story was called CharlesWORTH, so it's that sort of thing.
I think for the sort of game and style of story write up you are doing it might work really well.
You get a mystery game for you to solve rather than having to come up with story and clues yourself with the downside that you know what could happen.
It won't be soon but I could write the game indicating how I am using Baker Street to influence it, that way you might get a better idea if it will work for you rather than spend £20:00.

Of course it does mean my studio will get a head start :) :)
I think I've just repeated what I said to Fitz lower down but have a look at that as well.
If you have anymore questions let me know, or I could mail you a copy of the scenario for the first game and write out the clues so you get a better idea of what the hell I'm talking about.
      Cheers

    1. Hi Fitz - thanks for letting me know you enjoyed it. When I originally decided to keep my game stories in one place I never expected to get so much enjoyment from interacting with other folk via the comments section and so this has turned out to be the highlight for me of blogging. It's this interchange of ideas, one thing sparking another.
We had a game of baker Street last night and enjoyed it quite a lot. We actually played co-op, so it can easily be played solo.

One of the things that don't work for me with Pulp Alley are plot points, they are probably perfect for competitive games because you can see if you won or lost, but that doesn't interest me in a solo game as much. They tend to lead to people wandering all over the place in an unrealistic fashion because the victory conditions lead you to do that. With Baker Street you need to explore an area to discover things that move the investigation forwards, I think if I combine that with elements of plot point resolution so that I may have to fight to get a clue or out smart someone or something, and maybe I can't actually resolve it, a bit like the game above. Two rolls on awareness and if fail you don't even know you missed the clue!
Using this game I don't need to spend time working out a series of clues, that's already done, also I don't know what they are so it's a mystery for me.
I think it has lots of potential, just need the time. :)
      Thanks again for dropping by.

When we used them to our Victorian Gothic Horror games we had a very big table with several London locations, but I'm pretty sure the game can be adapted to a small table as well - so the character only have to cross a street to get a clue, instead of having to ask for a Hanson to take her (or him) to the other side of the city! :O)

      Cheers! :O)

    2. BTW: in the post below see how the author reproduced the several locations of the boardgame "A TOUCH OF EVIL" in a single wargames table to be used with 28mm minis:

  13. I've thought you're gonna like it! :O)

Looking forward to see how you're gonna do with 221B for 28mm! IMHO, you can use a table sized as one of your usual game tables, and just adapt the 221B locations to the scenery you have available... if you're feeling too lazy to develop a big Victorian London table! :O)

Once your detective arrives in a location, it's gonna be a surprise for you if a CLUE can be found there, what makes the game really interesting and unpredictable! But in order to get the CLUE, the detective will have to succeed in some sort of challenge - be it a mental one of a physical confrontation of some sort (with some nasty foes or even rival detectives) - you can roll some dice on a special and very inspired CHALLENGE TABLE in order to find out what the detective will have to face, and this challenge must be resolved first in order to get the CLUE. So if the detective fails more challenges than she (or he) succeeds, it's possible that the game may end with an unsolved mystery... and a dead detective as well! :O)

    1. And of course I've just forget to say that in this way the game can be played either solo, co-op or against other players! I bet Mrs. V will like it and be hooked by 28mm games as well! ;O)

    2. Humm I think it's going to have to be extra, extra special to achieve that ;)

However she has been flying little aeroplanes, and beating me as well which is not right is it.

  14. Flying a red Fokker DR 1 Triplane and screaming "Die, DIE!" as she beats you to a pulp, I've read it somewhere... ;O)

WINGS OF GLORY is an amazing game! I have some friends that play it in HK, and they "re-scale" the action to 28mm when a pilot is downed behind enemy lines and have to cross to safety in order to show up for the next game, it's AWESOME! It's not an original idea, there was a 2003 Wizkids version of CRIMSON SKIES that played exactly that way: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/6551/crimson-skies

So... maybe you can integrate your WINGS Of GLORY games with the daring tales of your 28mm badass girls... AND even use your 1920s gangster figures in the same setting as well! ;O)

  15. Yet another intriguing idea Eduardo, I certainly have a flight in mind for Becky and the girls, but it was in a float plane up a river in South East Asia.

There are just so many ideas and so little time:)

  16. WOW, Badass Becky in China Station, that would be something! ;O)

"There are just so many ideas and so little time:)" - sadly, it's true! I really felt myself very depressed when thinking about it, so I try not to! :O)

BTW: since you're into WINGS OF GLORY, if you like comics the original ENEMY ACE series is really a masterpiece - both for the realistic WW1 air combat tactics, the code of honor of the pilots, the protagonist's red DR1 Triplane and Joe Kubert's art: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enemy_Ace

The collected ENEMY ACE SPECIAL 01 can be found in the link below in .cbr format (I use the free CDisplay Ex to read comics in this format - http://www.cdisplayex.com/ )

  17. Building a China Station was my original intent when i started with the pulp figures, and that's as far as it's got :( every so often i read something and that sets off a completely new train, there are so many just at the moment I'm going to have to shut down or overload..

I'll give these links a look through, thanks for that.
    Cheers :)

  18. Everyday I refrain myself from getting into Pulp games EXACTLY to not having to build a China Station - and stay forever lost in the pulp jungle! :O)

    2. Agreed 100% !!! :O)

The "China Station" concept reminds me of the early 80s "BRING'EM BACK ALIVE" and "TALES OF THE GOLDEN MONKEY" TV series mixed with The Banana Split's DANGER ISLAND!

    3. I've only heard of the Gold Monkey, just watched a bit on You tube, the story line sounds better than the programme looks :)

They all looks to be good setting for adventures.
